The Hollywood Bowl is probably one of my favorite places in Los Angeles: music, nature, creativity turning outdoors under the stars, who will not love? You can imagine how it was on the moon when the Hollywood Bowl asked me to design merchandising for the 2023 jazz festival! This was a dream collaboration. I was so inspired that I immediately began to draw with a black shapie. Just although I never move away from color, I first wanted to conceptualize black and white designs to see what attracted me graphically. I wanted to include elements that would represent music, artists, audience and iconography of Los Angeles to give designs a sense of place. These are some of my initial sketches.

We finally went with thesis (below) and added other elements and a lot of fun and bright color for the designs to establish! My designs were inspired by the free, improvising nature of jazz music and the natural elements that symbolize angels and palm trees, the sun, the shells and stars of Hollywood Bowl. I lowered art to represent not only music and musicians, but also the community. The points are shed from the representation of the Hollywood Bowl shell of the audience. The call and response between the audience and the musicians explode in a magical exhibition. The letters drawn by hand, geometric shapes and spirals remember the art deco style prevailing the duration of jazz. And the funky, funny and good vibrations that exudate art, well, that’s “Justina Spice” that I can’t help sprinkling everything I do! I hope you want to dance!

The Hollywood Bowl team (shout at Janice Bartczak and Melissa Achten!), Like our team in Jungelow, it is small but powerful. It was great to work with a team as agile as ours and iterate in designs as we get used to. Janice and Melissa even arrived at the launch party of Junghalow Pop Up (more about that in the next blog post!) And they invited us to the Jazz Festival a couple of days later. Very grateful to cultivate a more creative community!

It was a trip to see so many beautiful people walking with the merchandise! It seemed that art and creativity were connecting us all to each other. The Hollywood Bowl team also had the brilliant idea of adding cube hats to the merchandise line! How monsters are they?!?! PD were sold out in 4 hours!

It was so surreal to see my IRL designs in an iconic historical Ángeles. Still floating in a cloud of all the experience!

Thank you very much to the Hollywood Bowl for this opportunity and for having me and my family at this year’s jazz festival! Look at the complete collection here.
