Afghan man pleads guilty to plotting US election day attack

An Afghan man declared himself guilty on Friday of conspiring to carry out an attack against the day of the US elections on behalf of the Islamic State Group (IS), the Department of Justice said.

Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, was arrested in the central state of the United States of Oklahoma in October, several weeks before the presidential elections of November 5.

He declared himself guilty in a federal court in the city of Oklahoma to conspire to provide material support to IS and try to receive firearms and ammunition to carry out an attack.

Hefaces a maximum of 20 years in prison for the position of conspiracy and up to 15 years in prison for the position of firearms.

“By promising loyalty to IS and planning an attack against innocent Americans on election day, this accused in danger of extinction and seriously betrayed the nation that will cool refuge,” said Pamela Bondi in a statement.

Tawhedi and a co-conspirator, Abdullah Haji Zada, sought to buy two AK-47 and 500 rounds of ammunition to carry out a “attack of mass victims” on November 5, according to judicial documents.

The seller turned out to be an undercover FBI employee.

Zada, 18, declared himself guilty in April of the position of firearms and is waiting for the sentence.

According to the criminal complaint, Tawhedi entered the United States in September 2021 with a special immigrant visa.
