Whether he is a fan of history or the space exploration game on which the series is based, “The Last of Us” has just delivered a real explosion of the past.
In the penultimate episode of the second season, which premiered on Sunday night (May 18) in HBO Max, the story story visits the Wyoming Science and History Museum.
Warning: If you have not seen season 2 yet, episode 6 or “The Last of Us”, you may want to stop reading here, since there are minor spoilers ahead. If you have never seen the series or played the game, for the purposes of this article, you just need to know that it is Joel (Pedro Pascal), a harbing survivor of a global pandemic that has destroyed civilization), a girl has or what Yellie Girlisage or what Jellie Girlie or what Jellie Girlilis Jellie or what Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie or what Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie or what Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie or what Jellie Jellie Jellie or what Jellie Jellie Jellie or what Jellie Jellie or what Jellie Jellie Jellie Jellie or what Jellie Jellie Jellie Jelliegeisage or What Jellie Jellie Jellie) and who can be Humanity Hope.
As part of the episode, Joel shows Ellie surprising with a visit to the museum. Inside, they enter the Space and Astronomy Hall for Ellie’s delight (your interest in the flight and what it represents, escape and be able to control your own destination, is a recurring theme both in the game and in the television adaptation).
The two find a solar system that works on the floor from Ohrery, costumes of historical spaces on display and, in the center of the main room, a Apollo command module.
“Is it real?” Ellie asks, almost in a whisper.
“It’s real,” says Joel. “That went up and returned, Apollo 15 in 1971.”
After choosing a helmet for use (the type used by Gemini astronauts), Ellie rises to the capsule, followed by Joel, who closes the hatch behind him. Ellie immediately begins to give birth, make sound effects and call commands to accompany each click. Joel then surprises her with a tape cassette.
“Happy birthday, Kiddo,” he says. “This is something that was a powerful effort to find. Play it.”
Ellie inserts the cassette in her Walkman and, after Joel’s suggestion, closes her eyes when the audio begins to reproduce.
“Thirty seconds and counting,” says the voice of a man. “Astronauts report that they feel good. T-minus 25 seconds …”
What Ellie (and those who are seeing the episode) are listening to is the real audio of NASA’s public affairs officer, Jack, counting until the launch of Apollo 11, the first mission to land humans on the Moon, on July 16, 1969.
As King continues to tell, the sounds of the spacecraft come alive and the lights are mitigated. At nine seconds and the “beginning of the ignition sequence”, Ellie begins to shake from side to side in her seat. The light of the engines’s iginas is poured through the window, illuminating their face while it starts to tremble more quickly. “Lift, we have a takeoff, 32 minutes fits at the time …”
The sound and movement of the launch are soon replaced by the serenity of what Ellie imagines that it is to be in space. The sunlight dances on his face until he returns to reality with a wide smile.
Final Scene
The true Apollo 15 command module, which its crew called “Endeavor”, is exhibited today at the National Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and, unlike the spacecraft in the show, its interior control panels and equipment are exhibited.
Nor does it have vines that grow about it. Otherwise, the two could be twins. Well, almost.
“Interestingly, it was 110% of the real. We raised it slightly [in size] For all kinds of reasons, “said Don Macaulay, the production designer of this season of” The Last of Us “, in an interview with Collectspace.com”. We try to keep quite faithful to the game in terms of how we filmed that and how it was on. That is much more important in a digital set than in a real set. “
The series scene was inspired directly to a segment in “The Last of Us Part II”, a game released for the Sony PlayStation 4 in 2020.
To achieve the desired appearance, Macaulay and his team, with a 3D softball model of the command module that used to solve what pieces they needed to be removable to be able to insert cameras and lighting. Then they advanced to a large -scale foam version, so they could try the lighting and views.
“And then, yes, we build a complete interior and exterior,” Macaulay said. “We fired them separately, but everything was a set. We took the module to a separate stage to shoot inside, and then we brought it back to the museum to shoot him outside, but everything was a set.”
In addition to having the game, Macaulay also refers to the drawings and diagrams of the command module that NASA has published online. He was the same care when recreating the game of the game, which worked as shown. (He admitted, he thought he had to look for the word “Orrery” when he first discovered that he had to build one; Macaulay has led production for several science fiction projects [“Tomorrowland”, “Star Trek Beyond”]But this was the first to rely on real space exploration and astronomy).
The space costumes were interested in a support house. Macaulay wanted to make up the appearance of the game, so she also organized a large -scale lunar rover, an exhibition of rockets at scale and built a moon model, although only the Lattter made the final cut.
“It is one of those things in which we are provident of a ton and then, only depending on how he shoots and edits, some of them do not do so on the screen. In fact, we build and film an exhibition of whole dinosaurs [inside the museum] And he didn’t get to the program, “he told Collectspace.
The Veers television series far from what was seen in the game, so, Macaulay said, the sets like the space museum were so important to hit.
“It is so iconic in the game that we try to be quite faithful. I mean, we can never take the [virtual] Models they used in the game and simply build with them. Its sets are common on scaling, and we build sets specifically for the request for action. Therefore, obtaining the essence of the set is more important in this case, “he said.
“There was the iconic image of[Jolyllie[stopsforthealkaest[StandinginfrontofthecapsulesThatwassomething-AndtheCapsuleitSelf-Wetriedtoreapplicateasbestwecould”Saidmacaulay[JoelyEllie[paradosfrentealacápsulaentoncesesoeraalgoylacápsulaesmismatratamosdereplicarlocomosomosbastante”dijoMacaulay[JoelandEllie[standinginfrontofthecapsulesothatwassomething—andthecapsuleitself—wetriedtoreplicateasbestwecould”saidMacaulay
That leads to an obvious question: after all that attention to detail and the care of obtaining the correct appearance, what is a command module that was abandoned in the context of the plot of programs (and the game), and now it is not necessary?
“We still have it,” Macaulay said. “I don’t know if there is a lot of demand, but someone could because it is because of its profuses, or maybe HBO Max will keep it for use in some other show in the future.”
