Two NASA astronauts will carry out the fifth space walk in the history of history today (May 1), and you can see the live action.
Nichole Ayers and Anne McClain will go outside the International Space Station (ISS) at 8 am edt (1200 GMT), starting a space walk that is expected to last around 6.5 horses.
You can see the extrathicular activity (EVA) live here on Space.com, courtesy of NASA or directly through the agency. The coverage will begin at 6:30 AM EDT (1030 GMT).
Ayers and McClain “will relocate a communications antenna from the space station and install a assembly support before the installation of an additional set of solar matrices of implementation of the International Space Station, also called IROSA,” NASA officials wrote in a preview of space walking.
“Matrices will increase energy generation capacity by up to 30%, increasing the total power of the stations available from 160 kilowatts to 215 kilowatts,” they added. “The matrices will be installed on a future space walk after their arrival mission of Spacex Dragon’s commercial replenishment at the end of this year.”
This will only be the fifth female space walk, and the first since November 2023. The first Women’s Eva was only made by NASA Christina Koch and Jessica Meir astronauts in October 2019.
Today’s space walk will be the third for McClain, the first for Ayers and 275 in general in the history of ISS. Both women arrived at the Orbitantes Laboratory on March 16 at the CREW-10 Mission of Spacex.
