The last Dragon spacecraft that Spacex plans to build entered orbit for the first time with “Grace”.

Taking the flight on Wednesday (June 25) of the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the capsule rose with the fourth axiom space crew to visit the International Space Station. The AX-4 commander, Peggy Whitson, revealed the name of the spacecraft just when he separated from the upper stage of his rocket until his maid mission early.

“We had an incredible uphill trip and now we would like to establish our course for the International Space Station on board the newest member of the Dragon Fleet, our spacecraft called ‘Grace’,” said Whitson, who in addition to AX-4 leader is the director of the human space light in the space of the axioms and a former NASA astronaut who has the record of most of the time in a space for an American for a woman.

“Grace” is more than a name, “Whitson said.” It reflects the elegance with which we move through the space against the backdrop of the earth. It talks about the refinement of our mission, the harmony of science and spirit and favor without mere that we carry with humility. ”

“Grace reminds us that space light is not only an engineering seed, but an act of good work for the benefit of all humans everywhere,” he said.

Whitson’s comments were followed by comments from his crew companions, delivered in their native language. AX-4 Shubhanshu Pilot “Shuks” Shukla with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Sławosz “Soft” Uznański-Wiśniewski Mission Specialists in Poland and the European Space Agency (ESA) and Tibor Kapu of the Hungarian at 40 years of the 40 years of Hunor.

It has become the tradition that the first astronauts fly in a vehicle of the American commercial crew to have the honor of nameing it. In this case, Spacex-10 crew, originally leg to launch the new capsule (previously referred to by its Spacex serial number, 213). A NASA decision to advance in its release date, thought, resulted in its commercial spacecraft with AX-4.

“Yes, we had it about it, but maybe even more significantly, we had a leg pressured by many different people who had ideas for us,” said Crew-10 commander Anne McClain from NASA, answering a question of Collectpace.com about Crewthace. “So I would like to recognize our excellent flight director, Allison [Bolinger]and his flight control team “Athena”, since he was really pressing by a name. ”

“We are not going to share what we would have called the capsule, but we have told the next team that it could fly that we are now the lobbyists, pressing them to give rise to it,” McClain said.

It was not known immediately if “Grace” was the preferred nickname of the crew-10 (or Bollinger). Before entering orbit, everything Whitson would say about the name was that he had some relationship with the “joy”, the luxurious swan toy that she and her ax-4 crew companions chose as their zero gravity indicator. Swans are often described as elegant.

“What began with ‘Joy’ now continues with ‘Grace’,” said Paul Newton, a Axiom space engineer, in the company’s Live Ax-4 launch transmission.

Grace now binds to the dragons of the previous crew: effort, resistance, resistance and freedom.

“Endeavour” was the first Spacex spacecraft to fly to humans. Crystated by their first two crew members, Doug Hurley and Bob Behennken Earth Orbit on May 30, 2020, and revealed their name for capsule 206. Hurley and Behnken’s first trip to orbit (in separate missions).

Four months later, after NASA certified Spacex to begin regular missions to rotate the crew to address the International Space Station, astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi rose in “Resilience.” The four members of the crew 1 appointed Capsule 207 in the light of the global pandemic that challenged the Spacex and NASA teams to complete the spacecraft and launch their mission.

Capsule 210 was named “resistance” as an approval of the ego pandemic and the tenacity to push it beyond. The crew members-3 Raja Chari, Tom Marshburn, Kayla Barron and Matthias Maurer also recognized this story behind the nickname. Ernest Shackleton and his ship fellow who crossed Antarctica in 1914 were trapped on ice, forcing them to endure months of hard boats before being rescued.

“Freedom”, or Capsule 212, was appointed by the members of the Kjell Lindgren crew, Bob Hines, Jessica Watkins and Samantha Cristoforetti. In addition to celebrating a human right, “Freedom” was stimulated of the name that the first American to fly to space, Alan Shepard, gave his mercury capsule in 1961.

The tradition of American astronauts who name their spacecraft dates back to Mercury and Apollo programs. NASA’s Gemini capsules were not named and the orbiters of the space ferry were baptized by a written campaign, vote of the Committee or Student Contest.

The Dragon of the Spacex “Grace” crew is the first spacecraft with human qualification to fly under that name. A small “hopper” designed by intuitive machines to jump through the surface of the moon was also named “Grace” in honor of Grace Hopper, a pioneer in mathematics and computer programming. A new Observatory in orbit planned for launch in 2027, the Roman Space Telescope of Nancy Grace, bears the name of NASA’s first chief of astronomy.
