Hearing aids, such as canes or orthopedic shoes, are something you don’t think about when you are young. But maybe you should.
Probably know some who need headphones, or you will need them one day. Around 30 million people in the United States, 12 years or older, have hearing loss in both ears, and about two thirds of people end with hearing loss, which can vary from slight to severe, for their 70 years.
But talking to your parents or grandparents about obtaining headphones can be difficult, I have done it. You may not like the idea of putting things in their ears or facing the disseminated realities of aging and health. Surely they avoid the price of hearing aids, which can cost thousands of dollars and are not covered by insurance or medicine.
But connecting small and exorbitant speakers in your ears is not the only way. It is possible that his mother owns AIDS without knowing it.
Hearing aids have never been more accessible, or futuristic. In April, a company called Nuance begins to sell glasses that double as headphones thanks to microphones and speakers of beam forming in the frame. Although at $ 1,200, they are not cheap, they cost much less than a pair of prescribed headphones, which tend to vary from $ 2,000 to $ 7,000.
The Nuance glasses joined an increasingly busy market of headphones regulated by the FDA that includes everything from the last Apple Airpods Pro, which won the capacity through a software update, until Sony the size of a bean. The prices of these devices begin as low as $ 100, and does not need an audiologist to help establish them.

You can also buy something that is legal consultant, a personal sound amplification product (PSAP), which is not designed to treat hearing loss but does the strongest things. Some of them can also play music and handle phone calls. In the age at which headphones are ubiquitous, these devices attract all ages.
“It is good that we are seeing people aged 30, 40 and 50, talking about it, because the paradigm has changed me completely or participating in auditory care before,” Nicholas Reed, a member of the Faculty of the Nyu Grossman Medicine School, told me.
I am a millennium, but I also deal with hearing loss all my life. A bad stretch of infections of childhood ears left me mostly deaf in one ear and quite irregular in the other. I learned to read the lips when I was a teenager and avoid conversations at strong parties at the University. A surgery in my 20 years approached me to normal, but I could still use a little help.
I have spent the last weeks testing the nuance glasses in several environments. They are notable, not only because they feel almost indistinguishable from my regular glasses, but also because I forget that they are headphones. Made by Essiloruxotica, the company behind Ray-Ban and the dishes of other glasses brands, maternal glasses use the same technology as scratch-Ban glasses wear music and help you talk to ia. And although nuances glasses currently do not sacrifice the option to transmit audio, they help you listen to what your friend says in a high bar.
The Airpods Pro 2, which is sold for $ 250, also works equally. After Apple announced the past fall that a software update would unlock an accessibility configuration, it is properly called hearing aids, I began to use it all the time, alternating between listening to podcasts to order cold beer in a crowded store. In cases where I need to ask people to repeat tremors in the past, I listen to them well the first time. I just have to use AirPods all the time, which makes the glasses solution even more attractive.
For most people, hearing loss usually begins in their 50 and gains impulse in their first years of retirement. If you have ever taken a busy restaurant with your parents or grandparents, you know that this can be alienating for the person who is out and frustrating for the auditory as well. Social isolation can lead to loneliness and anxiety, which can accelerate cognitive decline and lower life expectancy.
The nuncarerity, neither traditional clinical headphones or the new category of devices are easy solutions. Once you start using any type of hearing, it has long been adjusting, and you may need help to adjust the sound while it is customary. That is a reason why so many people avoid it: only one in five that needs real hearing aids. You cannot put them in your ears and immediately have a perfect audience. Your brain adjusts to time, so you can take weeks or months adapt to new frequencies, headphones help you listen.
Even so, it is a project that is worth it.
“Sensory entry is so key to our existence, but we simply classify it or ignore it for so long,” said Droved. “It is something that is vital for its existence and how you connect with other people.”
It is not clear how the latest innovation of headphones will move the needle in adoption. Although free sales headphones have a leg available since 2022, when the FDA implemented new regulations for the devices, it is still a uphill battle for people to use them.

“We are not seeing great increases in the absorption of hearing aids since free sales headphones have been available,” said Tricia Ashby, senior director of audiology practices in the cardboard of American discourse (ASHA). “And I have to say that imitates other countries that had free sales headphones before the United States did.”
Given the fact that older people who need them most are less likely to prove the latest technology, they could take some years for free sale headphones to become the main current. Given the precedent established by companies such as Apple and Nuance, more devices may add hearing assistance characteristics to existing products.
You can imagine a future in which you use headphones that are the interface for your voice assistant, as well as your life in a strong plane. You may have glasses that project instructions to walk towards your field of vision and help you listen to what the director’s traffic comes when you have to cross the street. These characteristics together only become more important as they age and need a little more help.
“Now we are at an age that you are thinking of optimizing aging, and how do you do it?” Reed said. “And they are things like this.”
