Lauded California teacher abused elementary school boys, is sentenced

A San Diego County educator who was once appointed teacher of the year has been sentenced to perpetual chain for 30 years for assaulting and assaulting two children in their primary classroom in National City.

“This defendant violated the confidence he had with his students in the most extreme and traumatic way possible and the actions are despicable,” Dist. Atty. Summer Stephan said in a statement. “Your victims will have to deal with the effects of a life or negative and their 30 -year sentence is appropriate.”

Ma was appointed teacher of the year for academic year 2022-23 by the San Diego County Education Office. He obtained his degree in Biology and Master in Education of UC San Diego and had taught fifth and sixth grade in the National School District since 2013, according to a profile in the Tribune of the Union of San Diego.

She used her reputation as an educator above and Beyond who was personally invested in the success of the students to gain the trust of the parents of the victims, prosecutors said.

“No child deserves what this defendant did,” Stephan said. “I hope this prayer brings a measure of justice to the victims, their families and the community that remained in the crimes of this defendant.”
