The works for thousands of workers’ delivery workers in the US postal and UPS service. UU. They could be this year, and seeks to reduce costs and rationalize operations such as the effects of President Trump’s tariffs and digital innovation through the economy.

But what that means so that people with a package send or anxiously wait for an invoice or an important letter can depend on where they live.

This is what we know so far:

How many jobs are being cut?

Last week, the Executive Director of the United Parcel Service announced that the company will reduce 20,000 jobs this year, or about 4% of its global workforce and plan to close 73 distribution facilities at the end of June.

“We are executing the greatest reconfiguration of the network in the history of UPS,” said the company in a statement. “This strategic initiative will optimize the ability of our network to align with the expected volume levels and improve productivity through additional automation.”

The closures are part of a long -term plan to modernize the operations of their distribution centers, including automation aggregation, either fully or partly, to 400 or its facilities, according to CNN. Earlier this year, UPS announced that it reached an agreement with Amazon, its largest customer, to reduce business -related operations by more than 50% in the second half of 2026.

“In addition, the actions we are taking to reconfigure our network and reduce the cost in our business could not be more difficult,” the UPS executive director, Carol Tomésaid, Duration, a recent call call. “The macro environment can be uncertain, but with our actions, we will emerge as even stronger and more agile ups and downs.”

For its part, the Teamsters union that represents thousands of UPS workers said it would fight any cuts that damage its members.

“The United Parcel Service is a contractual bonus to create 30,000 Teamsters jobs under the current National Master Agreement,” said Sean M. O’Brien, president of Teamsters General, in a statement.

“If UPS chickens continue to reduce the size of corporate management, Teamsters won on their way,” he said. “But if the company intends to violate the contract or make any attempt to pursue well -paid teams, UPS will be in a great fight.”

In March, the then postmaster Louis Louis announced that the US Postal Service would reduce 10,000 positions, in addition to reducing the budget of the postal service with the help of the so -called efficiency department of the Government of Elon Musk. The Musk group is not a government agency.

The measure occurs when the postal service has experienced about $ 100 billion in losses and it was projected that it would lose $ 200 billion, Dejy said in its letter.

USPS uses 533,724 people like or 2024.

The postal service has been working to modernize its operational efficiency, reliability of the service and financial stability with its delivery plan for America, introduced in 2021.

The 10 -year plan was updated last year to review the initial objectives, highlight the changes and establish plans for future initiatives. Within the updated report, the postal service declared that the mail number compiled through its postal offices and by carriers on their routes has declined abruptly during the last decade.

The number of letters and postcards collected fell from 57 billion pieces in 1997 to only 12 billion pieces in 2023, a reduction of 80%.

Now, the postal service is reconfiguring its collection and transport processes to address that decrease. The mail is currently transported to and from the processing facilities and post offices twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. These deliveries will be reduced to a single daily trip in the morning, according to the report.

“This will optimize our regional transport, reduce unnecessary routes and accelerate processing,” the report said.

How will this affect the estimated delivery time?

Despite reducing 20,000 positions and automating work in 400 facilities, UPS says that changes in their operations will not affect customer experience.

But for the postal service of the United States, some changes must be expected.

These changes will be implemented in two phases, the first phase begged on April 1 and the second as of July 1.

Delivery times for first -class mail, which includes cards and postcards, will remain between one and five days.

The delivery time for priority mail Express, a service that allows customers to send packages of up to 70 pounds to any state, will now take between and three days. Previously, it was between one and two days, depending on how late the article was left.

The extreme to extreme marketing mail delivery, what most people call junk mail, along with magazines and newspapers, will be delivered faster, but USPS did not provide details.

“As with the mail, most competitive shipping products will retain the same service standard, some packages will have a faster standard and others will have a slightly slower standard,” the report said.

You can get more information about how long you can expect a package to reach your destination visiting your local post office or review the “Service Commits” tool online. The tool requests the exact postal code of where the package will be sent and sent by mail, on what date what time; It generates the average delivery time expected based on that information.
